Classes

Annerley, Brisbane

Bharatanatyam classes in Brisbane.

Four levels, from the first step to the stage. Classes run in Annerley. New batch enrolling now.

Beginners

Where every dancer starts

The first year builds the body and the habit. Students learn the basic steps and how to practise them.

Adavus, the basic steps of Bharatanatyam

Aramandi, the half-sitting posture that shapes the whole form

Mudras, the hand gestures, and their names

Talam. Counting, rhythm and listening

Intermediate

Steps become dance

The steps join into longer sequences. Students learn their first full dances and perform to music instead of counts.

The full set of adavus, joined into sequences

First full dances: Alarippu and Jathiswaram

Changes of speed within one piece

First lessons in abhinaya, dancing with the face

Advanced

The road to the stage

Dancers polish what they know and carry it in front of an audience.

Varnams, the long expressive story pieces

Abhinaya in depth: character and emotion

Stage practice and real performances

Preparation for the arangetram, the first full solo show

Adults

It is not too late

Adults learn the same art with the same respect. The pace fits adult bodies and adult schedules.

Longer warm-ups and careful progress

Better posture, fitness and focus along the way

No experience needed. No age limit.

The path

How a dancer is made.

Common questions

Answers to common questions.

Does my child need experience?

No. Beginners start from the very first step. Curiosity and regular practice are enough.

Am I too old to start?

No. The adults batch exists for exactly this. Some students start fresh. Some return after years away.

How soon will I perform?

When the basics are solid. Most students perform earlier than they expect.

What is an arangetram?

A dancer's first full solo show, performed after years of training. It is a milestone, not a finish line.
